Silk, known as the “queen of fibers,” has been an important core industry that has driven Japan’s economic growth. However, in the past quarter century, the production of cocoon has decreased by about 95% of the peak production, and the industry is facing a crisis that may result in the loss of the domestic sericulture industry. This is due to the aging of the farmers, the decrease in income, the lack of successors and so on.

On the other hand, recent technological advances have led to the promotion of research that considers silk not only as a fiber material, but also as a biomaterial that can be used in various fields such as medicine, food, and cosmetics. We are focusing on the great potential of silk and taking on the challenge of creating multifaceted value such as revitalizing the silk industry, building a production system and creating a community involving the local community. We will use silk to co-create the region, create best practices and create the future.
